4. Now practice calling your dog to you at unusual moments in and around the house, then in the yard. Build up your pup’s recall before practicing in the park or woods where there are more distractions. Here you can use a long line if you are unsure how your dog will respond. However, bear in mind that the more distractions there are, the better your rewards and praise need to be!

• Praise is not enough—take really good treats with you on every walk!

• Don’t call your dog if you know he’s likely to ignore you, i.e., playing with another dog or about to relieve himself.

• Call your dog often on a walk, not just when you are about to go home.

• Don’t scold your dog for a slow return or he will learn to avoid you in the future.
